As the auto industry rapidly changes, distinctions that were once clear in terms of which cars or manufacturers are truly "American" have blurred. Domestic brands have been bought and sold by foreign companies, while many Japanese automakers boast significant production from domestically located factories.

My first new car, a Pontiac, had a transmission built in Spain - this was in 1977. In my most recent new car, a Civic, the only thing built in Japan was the transaxle. And that Japanese-made component failed at 83,000 miles. A replacement bearing sent by Honda was also defective. Go figure.

I'm happy with my mostly all American Toyota Camry. It is a little lower because it is a hybrid but pretty soon all that extra stuff will be made and assembled here also.

The U.S. automobile industry sold out to the japanese because Union workers knew they were lazy and let quality slide. It cost many of them jobs and they cried about it. They will have to fight back but most americans don't want to work. They would rather sit behind a desk in front of a computer. America was built on strong work beliefs even if they had to get dirty hands.
