Nice informative article. One would think that, with billions riding on making the hydraulic fracturing process as benign as possible so that the continued use of this technology will be allowed in the nanny state that we now live in, the oil and gas exploration, oilfield service and oilfield production entities would make any and all reasonable and practical moves to have as environmentally safe a set of procedures, supplies, processes and operations as they can possibly come up with.

wrunner, I don't blame you ignoring the science that's available. I too was once duped into believing the hearsay against hydraulic fracturing. I got very interested in the actual effects of the process when I leased land for hunting in west Texas in the late 90's. we were concerned as to how the drilling would affect the hunting and water etc. after researching, asking questions of the landowner and then really doing some homework the science led me to the facts. There's never ever been a case of frac fluid migration into aquifers and the use of natural gas has not only held down but reduced America's carbon footprint. Is not less pollution what we are all after? Hope you had a great weekend! DocPepper.

No. 1: The jury is still out on safety.
No. 2: The winners and losers in anything continually change. The Green Bay Packers have won 47 Super Bowls in a row.

The gospel according to Halliburton.

"This study is really great news for the oil and gas industry. However, it gets even better as technological advances by Halliburton are virtually eliminating much of the concerns over fracking fluid and the industry's freshwater usage."

I like that, frack the fracking. Oh and lets trust Halliburton.

I doubt we'll see an answer with any science basis, but I must ask; how is it "so polluting so much that it maybe so unsafe after all."?

Maybe so, but it is so polluting so much that it maybe so unsafe after all.

Frack the fracking.

Save the fresh and potable water for human and animal use.

This DOE study just confirmed what Lisa Jackson, former administrator of the EPA said more than a year ago: that there was no evidence to link fracing to groundwater contamination. And Lisa Jackson was as liberal as they came.

Instead of the liberal left wingnuts' emotional rhetoric and lies, here are 2 important scientific facts.

1. Shale gas well are usually 8000 to 12000 feet deep. Some are even deeper. Fresh groundwater aquifers are usually less than 300 ft deep. Water injected into the well for fracing does NOT FLOW uphill. There is such a thing as gravity.

2. All fluids (liquid and gas) flow through the path of least resistance, which is the wellbore, production tubing and casing.

The solution seems obvious in hindsight no? Use food grade chemicals in fracturing fluid and then recycle the water.

Anyways , its obvious that in no way can fracturing fluid travel through 1.5 miles of solid rock.

"If fracking shows no evidence of hurting the environment, why is there more earthquakes around the areas that are being fracked? That alone can cause problems with drinking water. I don't agree with this one!"

Final Foolish thoughts

One thing is quite clear: Fracking is here to stay, and with it increased oil and gas production. With oil prices high, this is creating quite the profit potential for investors.

Not to mention oil companies!

Of course BO would say it is safe.

No surprise here.

Just call them.

Seems like pretty straightforward reporting to me. Statements and facts.

No, it's not propaganda, it's fact from science.

>>"A landmark study by the Department of Energy shows that there is no evidence the chemicals from fracking contaminate drinking water aquifers. After a year of monitoring, the study has found that fracking chemicals stayed thousands of feet below the areas that supply drinking water. In fact, drilling fluids that were tagged with unique markers and injected 8,000 feet underground were not detected in zones that were monitored 3,000 feet higher. This means that fracking fluids stayed nearly a mile away from drinking water."<<

This is not the kind of science the Eco-freaks want known!
