The folks at the Michigan Department of Transportation would like to remind us that “We’re All in this Together” when it comes to safety on the roads. To that end, MDOT has just initiated a statewide pilot program that will use electronic message signs that will display the number of traffic fatalities to date on state highways. The messages will be displayed the second Wednesday of every month, July through November, along various interstates, and Michigan and U.S. routes. MDOT officials are hoping motorists will find the numbers to be a wake-up call for better driving. “That’s the point,” MDOT Director Kirk T. Steudle said. “Displaying the number of lives lost on Michigan roads can be an effective way to influence driver behavior and increase driver focus.” Studies have shown that

Good idea but unfortunately, safe driving is usually an after thought for a lot of folks.

they used to do the mock crashes at my school it was effective for some of the kids. I guess this is the same concept anything that helps save at least one life is worth it.

Not news...anyone remember the 50's driving films showing rare roast beef and car crashes to scare teenagers when they learned to drive?

It may be better than giving stupid tickets. At the same time they must be much more severe with crazy drivers on the road

The ones that need to slow down and think, generally don't. Hard to cure stupid.

Should also remind us of how much $$ we help stuff in their pockets.
Then ask why the roads suck so much.

they need to post how many drunk drivers caused those accidents. Stay home and drink your spirits or call a taxi/friend/parents/grandparents/aunts/uncles...just call somebody from the bar !

I usually pass these large electronic message boards on the freeway several times each week. Today's message on M-6 gave the estimated driving times from Point A to Point B by using different routes.

those signs stink!!!

because so many folks in america reead at a fifth grade level...

they actually slow down to read a sign warning about a traffic jam 25 miles away..

causing another jam at the approach to the sign..

shut those things off, I don't need to read an amber or silver alert or even a warning about an acciodent the way I'm going or not... either way.. my choices are limited on most interstate highways and I can't avoid the jam one way or another.

Might as well use those signboards for something educational when nothing else is going on. Low cost way to remind drivers about safety issues.
