Michigan is interested in possibly commercializing a couple of rest areas along a major highway in the northern part of the state.

The state Department of Transportation put feelers out Thursday to companies looking to form public-private partnerships involving rest stops, freeway lighting, bridge construction and timber management.

That seems convenient. I don't think there's a whole lot up there.

Sounds like a basically good idea if the traffic warrants it, but there shouldn't be a need for complex public-private partnerships when a simple rental arrangement would do.

Why not? There are vending machines at rest stops. Just make sure to keep the picnic tables for those that want to eat outside.

Interesting, I thought we had those in the past. They were called "truck-stops'.

Not very optimistic that this idea will fulfill the hopes people have for it. Privatization of public facilities has had its problems.

This was quite popular 50 years ago but people just don't stop all that much when they are traveling now. Just want to get where they are going and not bothering to stop and smell or roses (or grab a leisure lunch).

These interstates are not toll roads. Why? Plenty of restaurants at the exits. They just want the revenue for renting them out.

A lot of people stopping at rest stops are RV's who prepare their own snacks and meals.

If the restaurants take away parking and scenic viewing spots, they could just be come truck stops instead.

Don't know if that is the case in the spots being considered.

May help if rest stops large enough to handle traffic.

Great idea. They have vending machines now. Wny not increase the state's revenue by providing needed munchies and coffee, etc? Not much different from the Ohio Turnpike.

Why not? Makes sense. What doesn't make sense is the government running this enterprise at all.

Would create a few jobs maybe?
Makes a break from long trips to stop at a nice rest-stop, which are few and far between.

The Florida Turnpike has had these since the beginning and recently announced that they are refurbishing their restaurants. Why not throw in a garage or two (or an auto parts store) for those travelers who have car problems which are only manifest whenever you travel great distances?

I thought they always had them. I remember seeing them and eating at restaurants on the interstate. Or maybe it was on turnpikes.

And they can charge half again as much for food, just like at airports.
