I was recently quoted in an Austin American-Statesman post fact-checking a claim by Roger Williams, a Republican congressman from the Austin area. In a recent newsletter to constituents, Williams claimed that “the liberal anti-free market policies of the Obama administration discourage the exploration of American sources of energy and hinder production and job growth.”

This has been a popular refrain among Republicans because, as Williams correctly pointed out in his July 1 letter, average gasoline prices have increased 86 percent since January 2009 – to $3.51 from $1.89. The reasoning goes something like this: Gas prices have risen, Obama is president, therefore Obama is to blame for the price increase.

>>"No, Obama's minions got the price down so he could get elected. You need to keep up with the facts."<<

Really, so you're admitting Obama's minions can control the price of gasoline? Therefore we must conclude that they caused the subsequent price increase after he was elected since they have that power. Interesting, to say the least.

Obama's trade policies are partly to blame, and the Federalpolicies toward the oil futures markets is also to blame.

When you print money out of thin air to pay for stuff (like wars & socialism), it creates inflation and the price of EVERYTHING goes up...

WHY, WHY, WHY, WHY, WHY, WHY, OH WHY! does it ALWAYS boil down to a fight between Dems and Reps?????

They are BOTH elected officials, elected to do a job of which they can not and will not do unless they vote "along party lines" !!!!!

And point a finger at the other side and tell us, like we don't know and don't know what they are going to say, how bad, wrong, (fill in the blank), the other side is and their side is right!

TIRED, TIRED, TIRED of the whole freaking mess and don't want to hear that crap again!

If you read the article, it does not address the fact that more oil has only been produced on Private land.

On Public land, which the Obama administration has more control over, less oil, year over year, has been produce for the last 5 years. This is a new trend.

The reasoning by this same guy, under the Bush administration, was the argument he blames Republicans for now.
Republicans are not making the argument this guy attributes to them. "Gas prices have risen, Obama is president, therefore Obama is to blame for the price increase. "

"Unless you are willing to settle for government-imposed wage and price controls, the policies of the government can only impact the economy in minor ways."

Ah. So the 130 pages of California regulations on the blending of gasoline have "minor" impact on CA gasoline prices? Note, too, that CA is one state out of 50, and this doesn't even count the federal imbecilities and thuggery. All "minor." Another Won voter weighs in.

CA gasoline blendings regs:

http://www.arb.ca.gov/fuels/gasoline/082908CaRFG_regs.pdf

130 pages of "minor" impact.

The price of oil steadily rose & peaked during Bush's time as president, and everything collapsed in his last year. Giving Obama a $65 a barrel starting point instead of the $150 a barrel starting point that was short lived.

My point is that any idiot can twist this into whatever their political agenda is. Presidents don't control the things we want to blame on them. Its how they react to things that happen on their watch that defines them.

the health care bill will be the firecracker that will propel the election of many more democrats into both the house and congress...

it is already working to a majority of folks benefit....

and saving us all money.....

I don't balme obama at all...

I blame the lazy american consumer... they buy the big trucks and gas guzzling cars...

and then gripe that it costs too much to drive them...

begs to ask "Why the heck did you buy them then?"

(one possible answer: too out of shape to get into a smaller vehicle, ie. I need this truck to haul my fat butt around)

When Bush was in office ALL the media was reporting the gas prices as if he were responsible for it. If one is responsible, then they are all responsible. Can't have it one way.

If you insist on blaming Obama for higher gas prices, then you also have to give him credit for the improving economy. It's not true in either case. Prices for gas and other commodities have always followed the economy, and the government has very little direct influence on that. Unless you are willing to settle for government-imposed wage and price controls, the policies of the government can only impact the economy in minor ways. And, if you recall, Nixon tried to impose wage and price controls in 1971 and it was a total disaster. So, we have to take the bad with the good and always remember that when it comes to gas prices, "It's the economy, Stupid!"

WonderfulMI and other liberals warp the facts and figures. They cherry pick a time during a 4-month blip in the summer of 2008, go ahead and exaggerate the price as $4.25, and then claim Obama did better. What a joke!

I'll take the 4-month blip anytime over the 5 full continuous years of high gas prices. With Bush, the prices spiked temporarily. With Obama, the prices remained high permanently.

From what I remember, when Bush became president, gas prices were much lower than 1.89$/gal and they rose higher than they've been under Obama... Yet I don't remember anyone blaming Bush as much as Republicans are blaming Obama.

When the Secretary of Energy says that we need to have prices more in line with Europe....

When the President of the United States deliberately disallows additional drilling...

When the pipeline from Canada is deliberately put on hold - if not killed outright...

There is NO myth to Obama's role... It is real. It is persistent.

Gas prices were $4.25 just before they plunged down in January 2009. That summer was when the economic meltdown started.

If Obama could tank the economy way down to where it was in 2008, gas prices would be lower. But no, he had to have the stock market reach a new high, and oil production increase more than it has in 20 years.

The Republicans have worked hard to trash the economy. Think where gas prices would be now if they had helped the economy instead.

But can we name one thing that he has done to lower fuel prices? He started a commision to look into high prices that never reported back. That doesn't count since nothing became of it.
