California will raise taxes on gasoline by 3.5 cents per gallon July 1.
The excise tax on gasoline will go up from 36 cents per gallon to 39.5 cents.
Sales taxes on gasoline pay for local government programs, while this excise tax pays for mass transit projects and work on highways around the state.
The five-member California State Board of Equalization adjusts the state's excise tax every year by March 1.

3.5 cents per gallon. In the grand scheme of things, there are bigger problems.

California should be pushed out of the Union, before they go down the tubes and we all have to pay for it.

This article doesn't mention the additional gasoline tax increase due to sales taxes. California gasoline state and local sales taxes also tax the excise tax and other taxes and fees that are part of the price. So an increase in the excise tax means there is an increase in the sales taxes too.

Voters here will continue to blame the oil industry for its high gasoline prices even though taxes account for about 70+ cents per gallon of our gasoline price. Until we can get a voter ID law to eliminate the fraudulent voters, we will continue to see more of the same.

And don't believe that any of that money will go towards roads. When Gov. Moonbeam Brown was governor here in the 70s and 80s, he directed all of the gasoline tax revenue to be used towards balancing the state's budget. It took years to repair the roads after he left office. He is probably doing the same thing now.

California has spent so much to support the automobile that it is not surprising that taxes to support all the construction and maintenance need to go up. While more attention is being given to mass transit from what I can see, there still needs to be more.

California will keep on raising taxes until people decide they've had enough. When will that be? I have no idea. I'm sort of amazed they've put up with it as long as they have.

Gasoline tax is higher in Canada than the US. Almost all tax is higher in Canada. In my province we pay higher than average tax on gas.

This will just be even more economic incentive for residents and businesses to move to other states.

Dear Californians: If you move to my state of PA, please do not keep voting for the same political party that drove your state to bankruptcy, high taxes and high crime. Thanks so much.

Keep the IRS scandals in mind when you read about this. They claim that they need to raise taxes because there is a shortfall in our budget. Is there really? Or is there wasteful government spending?

Who's porn are we buying for with this tax hike?

No more people. Demand less government and demand cutting costs.

You have to wonder just how much of the actual gasoline tax money is actually spent of roadwork.

I'm all for gas tax increases, we need TAX REVENUE to help our (essentially bankrupt) government, and ECONOMIC INCENTIVE for people to use less fossil fuel. Two birds with one stone.

Another reason to leave California and move to Texas. The Governor of Texas was smart to visit California and talk to businesses about the positives of moving their business to Texas.

If California would tighten up the social welfare programs eligibility, costs could be saved and new taxes wouldn't be needed.

From the article: "Read the BOE's explanation of the changes here."

"While gasoline consumption has been reduced slightly in recent years, in 2011 and 2012 the price of gasoline greatly and unexpectedly outpaced these modest declines in consumption. Higher gasoline prices mean the BOE must adjust the excise tax to make up for the sales tax loss"

============================================================

So those who practice conservation, in effect, have penalized everyone else because the law requires revenue neutrality. The state is required to steal a certain amount of money each year from the taxpayers.
