If you've ever lusted after a 1960's or '70's muscle car, but missed the chance to buy when these now-classics were new, don't fret. Today's modern muscle cars are better in every way.

You can argue styling pros and cons to the end of time. But from a pure driving dynamic, safety, and fuel economy perspectives, the new muscle positively trounces the originals. (Read: "2011 Ford Mustang V6 vs 1970 Mustang Boss 302: Who's the real boss?")

Looking to capture some of that America muscle this summer? Here's a run down of what's available now for V8 singing, roll-down-the-windows cruising:

Back in the 60's a good muscle car ran about $1K to $1500 more than the plain Jane

The problem is the cost.

I bought a new 1967 Mustang Fastback GT with the 200hp V8. Cost about $2800 (less than half a years salary). Hard for a working man to buy a nice muscle car now for less than half a years salary and if he could, the insurance would kill him.

The retro fad comes back every so often. I'll take the originals.

This writer missed the point and probably wasn't even born in the 60s.

The problem is I could fix those cars but the new ones are impossible without specialty computer diagnosis. Big difference.

I purchased a new 1966 Chevelle SS 396 and I would prefer to have that car again instead of a new one with all the smog and computer junk.

It is the greatest stock muscle car era. However, these cars are so sophisticated that popping off the air cleaner, enrichening the fuel/air mixture, and bolting on a blower and heading off to the drag strip is not possible any more.

I recently had a chance to beat on a new SRT Challenger and I have to say the smile factor was at the top of the scale! I thoroughly enjoyed burying the pedal and burning the tires all the way through third gear. I still have yet to drive the Camero, but I am still a big fan of the Mustang, especially the Boss.

When I think of "muscle car," I don't think of fiberglass. Times change.
