In 1964, California crooners the Beach Boys sang about having "fun, fun, fun, 'til her daddy takes the T-bird away." Well, nearly 50 years later, Golden State residents still have to worry about someone snatching their ride from them — but it's not their daddy. The Des Plaines, Ill.-based National Insurance Crime Bureau has released its "Hot Spots" vehicle-theft report for 2012, and California once again dominates as a "hotbed for hot cars."

Yeah here they just break into cars not steal them. I wonder if they have statistics on that.

I'm surprised Indy isn't in the top-10 with the frequency of carjackings we have been hearing about.

Radar1992, in this day I tend to agree that it's more "people being stupid and not securing their vehicles..."

Assume what ever you own, someone else wants and when it's gone, don't expect to get it back. Take appropriate precautions. Did I really have to write this?

I wonder if this is from organized crime and chops shops or people being stupid and not securing their vehicles...

"The NICB advises motorists to take precautions against vehicle theft starting with common-sense measures like removing keys from the ignition, locking doors and closing windows,"

I wonder what are the statistics if we exclude leaving the keys in the car ...

"and parking in well-lit areas."

You don't always have a choice.

"Beyond that, bigger and better anti-theft measures include installing a warning device such as a car alarm,"

That's so 80's!

"using immobilizing devices such as a smart key or fuse cutoffs"

I thought all cars had that by now. Anything built within the last 10 yrs should have it. Which manufacturers don't?

"and using a tracking device that emits a signal to authorities if the vehicle is stolen."

Only if the police in your state has the equipment to track it.

Nice to see California number 1. Might be because of the foreign nameplate's inept auto theft systems. The city that rank last is in the American Big 3 home state.
