North Carolina auto dealers say they're moving ahead with a bill updating franchise laws without a provision that effectively bans the business model of electric car manufacturer Tesla.

"Given the issue is whether Tesla can transact online, it seems pretty straightforward, and we're not sure what a compromise would look like," said Shanna Hendriks, a company spokeswoman, in an e-mail. "We are pleased with the outcome of the legislative session this week and are grateful to the North Carolina legislature and governor for not precluding our ability to serve the consumers of North Carolina."

Well, perhaps they might want to get some assistance and the playbook for their fight against the 21st Centruy from the United Buggy Whip Manufacturers Assn, and the Rich Guys for Whale Oil Lamp Lights while they are at it.

Die, STEALERships, Die! And it can't be too soon that STEALERships go the way of coal fired trains and the telegraph.

The last gasp - these dealers know that they face strong opposition from the public and that they've already lost. They should now be gearing up their service departments to charge and fix these cars, instead of trying to stand in front of an oncoming train.

Wow, the North Carolina auto dealers are being pretty public about how greedy they are. And for the NC Senate to let that bill pass is so corrupt. I can't believe it's actually legal to eliminate competition like that. I mean I can, but it's just so obviously publicly greedy. Those auto dealers and the NC Senate don't seem worried at all that their customers/constituents care about such matters.

With that kind of attitude, if I lived in NC, I would be tempted to leave the state to buy a car.

Every business wants to restrict, control, and limit competition. This is not good for consumers.

davenles: "If the dealers have a better product, then why are they afraid?"

They don't have a better product. Tesla was voted car of the year with the highest rating ever given.

Why is N.C. opposed to free trade ????
Tesla is doomed anyway because of poor technology.
The N.C. dealers should see to it that the autos THEY sell are worth driving home!

Customers will decide whether or not they want to do business with dealers or straight with the manufacturer.

People protected by very outdated laws make lots of money. Money they will either lose or have to work harder for if they are changed.

It's just a choice between going to a dealership or not. What's wrong with allowing consumers to make that choice? This situation reminds me of cabooses that were attached to trains long after the need for them was gone because there was objection to eliminating the "caboose man's" job.
