If it’s time for a new set of wheels, with it will come the inevitable question: Should I buy or lease a car? It’s important to do your research before you decide which option makes sense for you and your budget. And although we would all love a brand new sports car every couple of years, is that financially realistic or responsible?

Unlike purchasing a home, which can be a sound financial investment, a car automatically depreciates once it is driven out of a dealership’s parking lot. When you’re making your decision, consider these factors that could change the way you think about leasing.

1. Less money upfront: Typically, leasing a car requires a lower down payment (if any at all) than purchasing. Additionally, the sales tax is lower because you pay based on the used value of the car.

Always best to BUY a car, especially if you drive a lot of miles.

Leasing works for companies, not so much for individuals.

Too many strings with a lease for me. I will always buy and then run into the ground.

leasing makes sense for only about 0.1% of drivers, the rest are better off buying, most are better off buying used.

Sure I'll lease as long as I can still put 30,000 miles a year on it without paying extra.

Buy a car for $ 20,000, lease the same car for $2,000 down, $ 200 per month. In the first year your out $4400 leaving $15,600 still in your control. If you can use the money as an investment vehicle or pay off debt- lease.

If you can't use the lease expense as a write-off against taxes - don't lease.

Buy. No lease.

Doesn't matter; either way is a waste of money.

I would buy something used that would be lower priced anyway. Need to get out all the details on leasing, miles and other things.

Leasing is only for those people who do not care about money and want to drive a new car every 3 years.
Anyway it's wasting money no matter how many miles in a year you drive.
Only dealerships win from leasing.
I never lease.

I would outdrive the mileage limits, so a lease is a non-starter. Also, I tend to drive a new car until the wheels fall off; I don't have a need to drive the latest model. So I have never leased and don't plan to.

Better off, I think, to buy a used car you can afford. I don't think leasing is the way to go.

There are way to many restrictions involved in leasing. I would only lease if I wanted a new car every 2 years and didn't drive more then 10,000 miles a year. If you intend to keep the car longer then it takes to pay it off, your better off buying.

Sound financial advice dictates that one should buy what they can comfortably afford in cash. One should not borrow money to purchase something that is a depreciating liability.
