The Associated Press
Posted: Thursday, June 27, 2013, 9:47 AM TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - New Jersey is stiffening the penalties for motorists who use handheld cellphones to talk or text.

A bill signed into law Thursday increases the fine to a minimum of $200 and a maximum of $400 for a first offense. A second offense carries a minimum fine of $400 and a maximum of $600 and a minimum of $600 and a maximum of $800 for third or subsequent offenses.

Judges can also suspend a driver's license for 90 days for anyone convicted of third or subsequent offenses and impose three motor vehicle points.

Tougher laws wont make a difference. Responsible people do make a difference. Besides, I always knew Chris Christie was a closet liberal.

Good move, but tougher penalties will not stop people from doing stupid acts like texting while driving.

Schvanda63, you said it. We have a cell phone ban here but I've seen cops go right past people yakking away without even a shrug.

You could make it a death penalty offense, but if you can't or wont enforce it, you might as well not have a law against it.

Just take their phone when they get pulled over. They can get it back when they go to court & pay the fine. Most can't live an hour without their phone in their hand anyway.

This is a positive move in the right direction!
All other states should follow this example.

Talking with/without headsets and texting is dangerous and takes your mind off of the job at hand-driving. Should be automatic suspension of license, just like drunk driving, which it is actually worse than for accident rates. Good move, now others should follow suit asap.

The problem is that urban legends are too often mistaken for "common sense".

After reading much of the hype about how evil all this rampant cell phone usage is, I fail to find any evidence of a direct causal link between cell phone usage and an increase in accidents.

You say, "well people lie about whether they were on a cell phone."

I say, you are ignoring the evidence: with the vast explosion in cell phone use, shouldn't we see a corresponding increase in accidents???

It isn't there.
Accident rates are down.

Explain that, duh.

Don't use the cell phone in any manner when you're driving.

It is very sad that the government needs to intervene because it should just be common sense!

What about eating, drinking, adjusting the radio, hair, makeup, shaving and other distracted driving? I suppose that is ok.

The Ohio troopers need to start pulling over people who are tail gating. It is no wonder there are ever bigger wrecks. People brainless driving with their bumper jammed into the rear end of the car in front of them is causing wrecks. Not accidents. WRECKS!

Good. Now make sure it's enforced. It's just too bad the discovery is more likely made after an accident.
