The latest battleground is North Carolina, where the Republican-controlled state Senate last month unanimously approved a measure that would block Tesla from selling online, its only sales outlet here. Tesla has staged whiz-bang test drives for legislators in front of the State House and hired one of the state's most influential lobbyists to stave off a similar vote in the House before the legislative session ends in early July.
Stephen Voss for The Wall Street Journal Tesla 'galleries' such as this one in McLean, Va., can show but not sell cars.
The focus of the power struggle between Mr. Musk and auto dealers is a thicket of state franchise laws, many of which go back to the auto industry's earliest days when industry pioneer Henry Ford began turning to eager entrepreneurs to help sell

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned at how valuable a service all those knowledgable car salesmen are to the public. We must preserve the current system otherwise some members of the public might get taken advantage of by a non-dealer car salesman, who we know to be certified to be honest and trusting and only out to help people into the car that they need.

In some states, including North Carolina, dealers are pushing lawmakers to strengthen prohibitions against any form of direct-to-consumer selling by auto makers.

Nothing like self preservation, considering many of the dealers are lawmakers. Don't want no horses racing that might create competition for the home herd.

Same old story: politicians getting in the way of commerce on account of insider hookups with local businesses. Tired of it yet?

Yes, because the GOP hates the free market and loves its financial donors.

If the buyers pay the appropriate state sales tax, it's good for everyone.

gcalleja has it right. It IS unfair trade. The auto dealers are trying to shut out Telsa unfairly just to save their old business model that adds more cost to vehicles.

I used to live in NC. One of the most telling things about the state was when a woman told me NC was the best state in the country and she knew it to be true because she had never been out of NC. Regretfully, she was far from alone in that. Regretfully, it is how the GOP operates today, too. The GOP hasn't always been that way.

TX has its own ego problems.

Many of those laws are trade restraints.

Bury them Tesla. Deep and dead. Or alive. I don't care which way - just bury them.

This law is crazy - Tesla does not have franchise dealers and therefore should be allowed to sell their cars online. I can buy any other car online, why not this one?
