"Continued operation of the wind turbines ... in excess of the limit set forth in the DEP noise regulations, during the hours of 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., constitutes a nuisance which is injurious to the public health."

Fairhaven is a town near New Bedford Mass, on the way to Cape Cod.

I live less than 1/2 mile from 3 gigantic windmills. They make absolutely no noise whatsoever. I've walked over to them and stood as close as possible, almost directly underneath. I couldn't hear a thing. They are dead silent. They are also kinda cool to watch while sitting on the back porch. They spin fairly slow, seagulls fly right through the blades harmlessly.

I go snowboarding in the Berkshires. The ski resort has a gigantic windmill on the mountaintop. The trail goes right next to and underneath it. Its a good place to stop while skiing to hang out. If I listen carefully, I think I can hear something, maybe, not sure. Possibly a little wind whoosh, but no whirring , rumble, or mechanical noise.

About 5 miles from here are two older windmills, they spin really fast. I can drive over there and park underneath one. If it makes a noise, I must be deaf. No dead birds underneath either.

I'm no lover of windmills and think they are an economical dead end, but they are picturesque, make a good neighbor, and are relaxing to watch.

It appears as though this industry is plagued with many problems. It would be difficult to restrict operation of these windmills and expect them to be profitable. To where will the "greenies" now turn?

There you go, how stupid can they be to put 2 turbines right next to a town?
I have seen some inside a town in Europe, and they also shut them down at night. So no power at night, no production, loss of money.....

I guess the 'noise' impact has been a skirted issue for a long time and likely needs more than just a pocket-book answer.

I can see 10PM to 7AM as quiet hours (that's what is in Mass Gen'l Law wrt "disturbing the peace") but 7PM?

Sounds like the town is looking to lose a legal fight in court.

I do wonder how close to housing these turbines actually are?

It's actually the subsonics the caused problems.

They need to shut them down 24 hours to stop killing the birds.

Fair enough, Fairhaven.

Keep sleeping dogs, remain sleeping.

Take good care of the people and they will take good care of the windmills.

"Acceptable" levels are standardized and aren't very high. Maybe they should shut down the nearby roads that generate even higher levels?

Note that although this unofficial call for shutdown is for 12 hours a day (okay, night), the EPA found only a very few brief violations and those were in a 4-hour window.

This sounds more like a group of people who defy logic and reality just to get rid of wind farms.

I'd like to know how many decibels the noise really is. We can't judge if we don't know how loud it is.

Didn't they once have "blue laws" that you could not drive a car after dark or cars had to pull over to give horses the right of way?
This injurious to health could be possible , but sounds more like a political ploy to shut down a green industry. Sort of like defunding popular programs you can't eliminate with votes.

Captain "I've followed opposition to turbines, but haven't heard of any studies that show they are "injurious".
=================================================
Perhaps you should read up on the subject more.

"Many people living within 2 km (1.25 miles) of these spinning giants get sick. So sick that they often abandon (as in, lock the door and leave) their homes. Nobody wants to buy their acoustically toxic homes. The “lucky ones” get quietly bought out by the wind developers—who steadfastly refuse to acknowledge that Wind Turbine Syndrome exists. (And yet the wind developers thoughtfully include a confidentiality clause in the sales agreement, forbidding their victim from discussing the matter further.)"

These discoveries have been uncovered by Nina Pierpont, MD, PhD, she earned the MD degree at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and PhD (Population Biology) from Princeton University. She is an honors graduate of Yale University. She has been Clinical Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Columbia University’s College of Physicians & Surgeons, Senior Attending Physician in Pediatrics at Bassett Healthcare (Cooperstown, NY), Chief of Pediatrics at a native-run hospital on the Alaska tundra, and pediatrician to the St. Regis Mohawk Nation (NY State). Currently, she is in private practice on the northern boundary of the Adirondack Park (NY State), specializing in behavioral medicine (children & adults). She is licensed in the State of NY and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Cut off the power to the town when the windmills are not running.

Years ago, all high tension power lines were known to cause very serious health and property damage issues. They killed cows, kept crops from growing, buzzed peoples ears, made car paint peel - on and on and on.

Maybe we should look at what was done to keep the power lines under control. Might apply to windmills.LOL LOL

So how do the greenies justify using technology only 50% of the time? Should they propose that gasoline and diesel be used and sold only 50% of the time to supposedly save our climate from further change? LOL
