When we think of innovation in the energy sector, we typically think of companies exploring alternative energy solutions, such as wind , solar or even nuclear. But something very interesting is taking place with enormous implications for both U.S. economic policy and foreign policy. The latest report on the global energy industry from the International Energy Agency (IEA) shows that the U.S. will become a net oil exporter by the year 2020 and energy independent by the year 2035. We’ll actually be pumping more oil than Saudi Arabia by 2017 - and pumping more than is needed to keep our economy moving shortly thereafter - and it’s all due to our remarkable ability to extract oil from places that never used to be possible. In short, technological innovation is making it possible for America to

This is mostly speculation with few supporting facts.

Oil exports to keep our economy moving? They're scraping bottom to make Obama look good.

This dose not lesson the need to conserve. Reaching the goal of independence doesn't mean that you stay that way forever. Nonrenewable resources have a limit and as stated it is will be a world commodity and priced accordingly.

Not all "innovations" are good things in the long run.
The "law of unintended consequences" may be at play here.

The author of this article didn't do much research, unless reading the headlines of mis-informed newspapers counts... He attributes the ability to extract oil from shale to fracking, saying: "...because we’ve invented a nifty little process called 'hydraulic fracturing'..."

What he doesn't seem to understand is that fracking has been around for 60 years with hardly any mention of problems or potential... what is new is horizontal drilling, which allows fracking to be profitable and innovative.

Just got a notice yesterday from a local recycler that they will NOT take fracking pipe!!!
It seems there are explosive charges made into the pipe some of which are un-exploded!

There may be a nitch for a Frack Pipe spicific recycling process to deal with the potentially dangerous byproduct of the fracking process. This raises the cost of course!

Good. Let's move it then. With KNOWN reserves with amounts that will last us beyond 2313, it's time we get movin'. Export nothing "by 2020". Let the rest of the world go to the Saudi's.

One problem is that Oil companies are not run by the government, nor should they be. So with global demand for oil rising, the price for oil, and of course gas, will continue to rise. We may be energy independent by 2035, but if world demand continues to grow, our prices will be very high. The only benefactor will be the oil companies.

Depending on the overall outcome, this remains to be seen.
And there are no promises of reduced gas prices here, either.

I find it remarkable they were able to innovate this much with all of the environurts and EPA fighting them at every step. Just glad they are succeeding in spite of our government intervention at every step.

And while this innovation in methodology is good, it is not seeming to help at the pump where most Americans feel the pain.
