Anybody can run right down to the Chevrolet store, order up a Corvette and have a fast car. Considering a Honda Accord can run well into the low $30,000 range, Corvettes aren’t even expensive anymore. But a true car guy will shop for cars that look commonplace, dowdy, decontented or even downright ugly just to see the look on the face of a flashier car’s driver when they get dusted at a stop light. BoldRide presents five of the sleepiest sleeper cars in history:

I think "sleeper" is the operative word here. At least that's the way they look.

Yes, DanMtz - back in '88 when I was shopping for my first new car I passed the Sentra right over and eventually got a Golf - kept it 19 years. That the early '90's Sentra had such great performance is a fact that passed me by.

A 1991 Sentra? I had an earlier model and find it hard to believe. The whole steering column rattled when driving around 65 mph.

That Buick definitely looks like a contender so I don't think that any racer would be ashamed of losing to that one. The others, especially the mini-van, that would sting.

One of the quickest cars I've ever seen, was the 1984 Dodge/Plymouth Colt GTS Turbo. It had a 2 speed transfer case on a front wheel drive car giving it 8 speeds forward and 2 in reverse, With 102 horsepower but only 1865 pounds, it was shockingly fast.

I think the glorified Ford LTD, (once the Ford Fairmont) was interesting. A wolf in sheep's clothing.

I thought the sleeper car was a 200 year old Volkswagen Beetle.

sleeper alright...they can sleep in someone else's garage...not one is my favorite. Maybe a 2013 Red Viper would catch my eye.
