Who knew the simple car horn could be so useful? A trip to Shanghai reminds one that a vehicle feature we in the U.S. have been taught to use sparingly can still be a primary driving tool. Anyone who has experienced traffic jams in China knows that the locals are fond of expressing frustration with liberal use of their horns. In fact, the horn is so heavily used that car company engineers in China pay special attention to the quality and durability of their horn suppliers' products to ensure consumer satisfaction. This plays out at a typical busy city intersection, where a chorus of horns quickly sounds out when gridlock develops. Where the streets are wide, Chinese drivers also have a curious habit of simply double or triple parking their cars, as if abandoned, but that's another story.

My horn sends a text message to the teen driver about to crash into me. Now that's something they'll pay attention to...

It is a regional thing. I seldome hear a horn around here, and when I do it is a quick tap. I may have used mine once in the past month (light had been green for 2-3 seconds and I could see the driver in front was on the phone).

I get honked at pretty much daily while driving through Stabba Ana because so many pedestrians cross illegally & the driver behind me cannot see that I'm stopped at a green light because a pedestrian with a death wish is in front of me. Maybe the fact that the drivers in the other lanes are also mysteriously ignoring the red light should be a clue to the idiot behind me who is laying on his horn.

The horn comes in handy when you are behind some Barbie who would rather fiddle with her cell phone than drive, at a red light.

How about a radio channel that only reaches a few car lengths?

"Hey dummy, use the long skinny pedal!"

The digital sign has been done, just hasn't caught on.

WHAT - "..in the U.S. have been taught to use sparingly can still be a primary driving tool."

SINCE WHEN?

I use it whenever someone does something stupid - that means at least once a day! And screw anyone that's offended that I honked at them!

Horns have their uses.

Try telling that to NY drivers in downtown NY city.

There you'll get the horn and a finger.

I like my horn and like others I use it sparingly, but I do use it. The only other alternative is to put Adderall in the water so I won't have to use it. I give people 3 seconds then give them a nudge. I've also had to use it once or twice to alert texters or other distracted drivers when they have swerved into my lane.

Only the horn can provide instant contact when I find someone drifting into my lane. If I had to use internet messaging, there would be a crash before I was able to send and/or they would be able to re-act

In Jamaica, I found that car horns are accepted as just another mode of conversation, especially for the taxis... a quick way to communicate with pedestrians as well as other cars.

My horn is pretty much useless. It alerts me when I put the alarm system on and that's about it. I rarely need to notify other drivers. Traffic just isn't that bad around here.

So texting is bad but having communication devices for the front and rear of your car is a good idea? How about we just use our cars to go places and get there safely?

Personally, I like to blow my horn at the people who cross the line at a red light and then back up out of the intersection forgetting to take the car out of reverse. The look of surprise on their faces when the light turns green, I honk the horn, they stomp on the gas and their car jumps backwards, priceless.

I, too, use the horn sparingly to notify an impending problem.

Sometimes, the potential problem happens so quickly, that there isn't even time to use the horn because you are reacting to the situation at hand.

Honking to alert someone in a building is rude.

The horn is out-moded by rolled-up car windows.

Parking lot conversations reveal that people who drive like sociopaths may actually BE sociopaths. Verbalizing comments at highway speed may be imprudent.

I use my horn sparingly, like many others here, to alert or warn someone driving too slow or weaving due to texting and fiddling with their cell phones. I'll also give a couple of short beeps to thank a driver for some courtesy.

I want an ahooga horn!!

I love my horn, too.

As I get older, I find it is more useful to honk at distracted drivers: whether sitting too long at a light, texting, looking at their GPS, or driving too slow.

Around here the horn seems to be a way for some people to say "hi" to someone the saw yesterday. Sad because horns are meant to be used as a warning.

You have to have a horn that will sound loud enough to jar someone awake to get their attention when they sit at a stop sign or traffic light too long.

No friggin way - not with all of the darn wildlife up here. It comes in very handy; otherwise I'd have to get out and kick the deer. Crawl back in your hole John McCormick.
