Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker's administration wants to delay work on the massive I-94 North-South and Zoo Interchange projects and cut payments for the Hiawatha passenger service to Chicago to help close a $63.4 million shortfall in the state's road fund over the next two years.

The Republican governor would rely purely on spending cuts to close the funding gap rather than raise taxes or fees, likely delaying, until 2015 at least, the inevitable confrontation between the state's sizable transportation plans and its inadequate ability to fund them. The plan from the state Department of Transportation comes just a day before the Legislature's Joint Finance Committee is set to take up Walker's 2013-'15 road plan as part of its overall budget deliberations.

Wish we could have as good a governor as Walker here in my socialist mess of a state. If you want a test case for the worst excesses of liberal theory, just look at my state.

He's trying to balance a budget? How did he get into politics in the first place?

Good, best thinking ahead - don't spend money you don't have, unlike Michigan spending on "high speed" rail; Ray LaHood spent $200 million tax dollars that we don't have for a half mile an hour MI Amtrack speed increase.

And bankrupt Detroit is spending millions on a slow trolley from a place no one lives to a place no one workers - hundreds of millions to be spent for a 3.3 mile trolley up Woodward Ave.

QUOTE :::Cutting back on road maintenance will catch up with the state sooner or later. Probably sooner. The roads won't repair themselves.:::

Thats why government plans and budgets for maintenance. Its a known expense.

Unlike the typical left wing strategy of deferring maintenance and then float a bond issue.

:::Walker's a typical right-winger: Kick the can down the road and convince yourself the problem will go away.

Wrong. Did you bother to read the referenced link? Or , like a typical liberal, do you simply hate all republicans?

Walker is a typical right winger in that he refuses to spend money for new road construction that the state doesn't have. Nice to have new roads but if you don't have the funds you don't get them.

This is unlike typical left-wingers who would just borrow the money and "kick the can down the road" to pay for it.

That is one way to balance the budget. No one can run a government on borrowed money forever.

If there's a shortfall in funds, something needs to be cut to keep the budget balanced.

Looks like a plan. more goerners should be willing to adjust their states spending plans as the revenue stream changes. Just because it was a good idea when the funds were flowing in, doesn't mean it is still a good idea. And, Amtrak needs to be self sufficient!
