Saudi oil minister Ali al-Naimi has called the US push for energy independence "naive," saying the country will continue to need Middle Eastern oil long into the future.

Naimi said on Tuesday he welcomed the surge in US domestic energy production from shale oil and gas fields, which he said will add depth and stability to global oil markets.

"Newly commercial reserves of shale or tight oil are transforming the energy industry in America - and that's great news," the AFP news agency quoted him as telling an audience of policy makers and academics at the Center for Strategic & International Studies in Washington.

"It is helping to sustain the US economy and create jobs at a difficult time.

"I welcome these new supplies into the global oil market." he added.

US to remain energy dependent, the US push for energy independence "naive," the country will continue to need Middle Eastern oil long into the future. How True, So Very True! The people and this country are addicted to oil, no matter where that oil comes from.
Big Oil and Big Gas sells fuel and natural gas on the world market for higher prices.
The US ‘oil and natural gas resources’ belong to the citizens of this country and are to be used by those same citizens! The price at the pump needs to go down to $2/gallon - *$3, *$3.50/gallon or *$4.00 is Not the new low!
More Refineries are Not the answer, Stop exporting fuel is!
*If 'they' can export all that fuel, there are enough refineries already, there is no need for more!
Take care of the domestic fuel market first and above all else before exporting and selling fuel or natural gas to other countries!
Drive vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

Very interesting news, and I'm not surprised by al-Naimi's commentary.

"I believe this talk of ending reliance is a naive, rather simplistic view."

Yup, because ending reliance isn't the goal, making money is. The US will be exporting to the highest bidder, so no chance of lowering the price to us.

I would expect the Saudi to say this. But he is very correct about it helping oil markets to remain somewhat stable.

I don't care if the Baaken is 10 times bigger than previous estimates, @clermont40miles. It's not infinity times bigger than previous estimates. Suck it all out of the ground now and what are we gonna do once it's gone?

Sorry, @Robert44. "Drill, baby, drill!" translates into "Export, baby, export!" when Big Oil hears it.

He may be right as the United States increases its exports, they still buy oil from the Saudis.

Saudi Arabia walks the fine line between staying friends with the rest of the Middle East and supplying the U.S. with oil, they have done so for the last couple of decades. Our only other "Friend" in the Middle East is Israel and I don't see them supplying us with oil anytime soon.
