Cooper's call did more than untether people from their traditional fixed phone lines; it opened the door to true mobility and continues to affect virtually every aspect of our lives.
Long gone are the clunky phones such as the DynaTAC, or the large cellphone famously used by Zack Morris on "Saved by the Bell." In their place are sleek smartphones and tablets with massive brains and access to a super-fast wireless connection. People don'

And they likely weighed 10 pounds...lol.
Maybe we need to get back to the big bulky phones so people stop using them while driving.

The first cellphone call was made 40 years ago today followed by the first auto accident caused by the driver being distracted from talking on the cellphone.

Somethings never change.

If Alexander Graham Bell was alive today and heard "There's an app for that!" he would have to ask "What's an App?"

I'm quite alive, and the first time I heard "There's an app for that!" I had to assume (correctly) what an "app" was.

As Iridium satellite phones are to this day.

They called the early technology "cellular phones" because they could reuse frequencies from long distances away. Nowadays, the cellular phone providers use the technology of limited-range towers where a moving phone would automatically and seamlessly hand off between towers. AMPS is not what I would think of as modern cell phone technology, in fact all carriers in the USA are no longer supporting it.

Really? The first call was to a competitor and it was a call to the guy in the commercials where he said "can you hear me now?"

It wasn't a phone, it was a hand held BRICK with an antenna!

And they should have never been called phones because they are not phones, they are two way transceivers with access to POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service - the land line phone system).

The term Cellular Phone came about because the idiots asked to back the concept of being able to wirelessly link into the phone system couldn't grasp that it was a hand held transceiver with access to the phone system, so it was explained that a phone would use groups of "cells" consisting of towers to access the phone system, hence the misnomer Cellular Phone. They also didn't want the new device confused with the already available and also misnamed mobile car phone which took up half a car truck to allow calls to be made from the car via radio towers.
