Diesels get about 30% better fuel economy than similar gasoline models. The problem is that lots of makers are withholding their diesels from the U.S. Ullrich thinks the tide will turn. "An avalanche of clean diesels coming into the market," should boost diesel sales, Ulrich says. "That makes us very optimistic."

Poster car for U.S. diesels is the VW Jetta SportWagen. About 85% are sold with diesels. The car's image as a practical vehicle begs for the fuel economy and pulling power of a diesel, and that combination appeals to practical-minded buyers. It starts at $26,030, or $1,250 more than the gasoline version.

VW sells more U.S. diesels than any other maker: Golf, 55% diesel; Touareg SUV, about 50%; Jetta sedan, about 25%. VW says overall diesel sales in 2011 were up 14% vs 2010.

They can keep believing in those prejudice! I don't need a higher priced gallon because demand would go up!

It is about time! I have a diesel van with over 300,000 miles and it has saved me many gallons of fuel! I wished the diesel prices were lower! We need to get the KEYSTONE PIPELINE built and more refineries. VW has some great commercials!

diesel still stinks, pollutes more, noisy, more expensive, but is slightly and slowly improving.

Judging by the posts here, I would say the prejudice against diesel is alive and well.

This article is more than one year old. Not really "news" - which implies "new". That being said, diesels just don't make economic sense for 90% of people right now. If you have a long highway commute, the payback time will be reduced, but it's still going to take a while. If you just love the way diesels drive, or if the price of fuel comes down, then that's a different story - go for it.

Diesel is 12-14% more than regular, but delivers 20-30% better mpg.

Let's hope diesel catches on here. They're half the market in Europe.

If diesel fuel were not 50-60 cents/gal higher than regular gas, this would be good news. This is another example of liars figure & figures lie.

Drop diesel fuel prices and a diesel vehicle looks even better.
