Many have worried we could see record gasoline prices this summer — but all of those fears appear to be overblown. Let me explain why we won't see record prices this summer.

Reason One: Refiners are running at 85 percent of capacity

Eighty-five percent is a bit higher than last year. The reason behind this increased refining is that the margin for turning a barrel of crude into gas is near record highs, and refineries want to take advantage of it by producing as much gasoline as they can. This trend will continue, driving down prices

Reason Two: Supplies outside of the Northeast are good

Superstorm Sandy caused some disruption in the supply lines in the Northeast. But the fact is that the Gulf is awash in gas, and that can help make up any shortfall this year.

I thought there should be five reasons? This list is one short so don't trust it!

In California, all it takes is a couple refinery incidents and prices skyrocket.

Interesting how gas prices can jump 40 cents in a day or a matter of hours and take weeks to drop 40 cents. Why might that be??

Well ... O.K., but I'm not all that grateful that we won't see records, because we are still painfully close to those records. One hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico, or one incident in the Arabian Gulf, or one oil spill or refinery fire, and we just might see gas prices at or above those records.

Gas prices have been falling, but very slowly.

Right, we won't see them at the moment. They've already set the bar pretty high. That isn't to say we won't see them at some point in the future.

"Don't worry about it" articles are as plentiful as "it's going to set records" articles. My bet is that, primairly due to inflation and risk of dollar as basis for oil prices, it will continue to increase albeit slowly but steadily.

when there is news of it being under $3.00 a gallon - which is what it would be if speculators were out of the market - then you'll have news this isn't news.

not record high but still too high for most average americans to make a living wage on. Almost where you can't afford to go to work

Only time will tell. Anything can happen with speculators and greed at the helm. Hope for the best.

It looks good on paper, but what if a new event occurs in 2013. Lower prices will then be out the window!

Only one reason needed to throw that article in the trash and for gasoline prices to go even higher.

I hope we have already seen the high for this year, and sure would be nice to see under $3.00 a gallon gas again.
