Nevada's highways could be on the fast track, now that a state lawmaker has introduced a bill that would  raise the Silver State’s maximum speed limit to 85 mph.

"I drive out on the Interstate 80 quite often and the maximum speed limit there is 75 [mph]," says Sen. Don Gustavson, the bill's sponsor. "Most people do faster than that, they do 80 to 85. If we increase the speed limit to 85, these people that are already doing that speed will be doing so legally."

Safety is a concern. If the limit is 85, people will go 95 and higher.

Not to mention those who are driving at 55 or 65.

Gustavson's reason is stupid. They are already breaking the law so lets just make it legal?
In some areas, 80-85 is fine. ANd for those that say people will do 95+ now, not really. I have driven on sections of roadway in Texas with 80 mph limits and doing 80 I was almost never passed, and even then barely.

If the highway can handle the higher speed, then it will happen.

That would more or less decriminalize what's already going on.

85 is a great speed to set the limit at, think about it 85 is fast for most people more people feel comfortable at abound 65-75 so the faster speed will not come into play, just leave the first two lanes as the slower lanes and two on the outside as the 85 mph speeds.

So now 90-95 wilL be the new normal. I have NO problem with those higher speeds as long as they are STRICKLY ENFORCED!

CheapchickKY says "Gustavson's logic is off, you don't change things to make them legal." Lets look at somethings that this has been done with. Abortion, drinking age, voting age, spitting on the sidewalk (in some areas), illegal immigration (changed not fixed every few years), homosexuality, divorce (yes it used to be illegal in some states), oral sex, anal sex, etc sex, gay marriage, interracial marriage, pornography, women, voting, blacks voting, Chinese voting, anyone who isn't a white male over the age of 21 voting, drinking, sell alcohol on Sunday (insome places), Marijuana (in some states), ...... hmmmmmmm, maybe you are just having a bad day.

If you set the speed limit at 85, many drivers will be doing 95. Just hope their reaction time can handle it... and they're nowhere around me when they lose control.

Used to be there was no speed limit in NV. You could drive 100 (I often did 120 when travelling across country) and get through the state in no time. The downside was highway patrol would wait at the border and chase you down if you were still doing 100 once you left NV.

I don't like driving 85; I use more fuel. 70-75 mph suits me fine.

This is really dumb. It just encourages people to drive faster, use more gas, and cause their vehicles more wear and tear. That is not to speak of the safety factor.

And the lawmaker's logic? Maybe we should just make the limit the maximum the speedometer shows, and then no one would drive over the limit. It would make about as much sense.

Makes sense. Speed limits on most of our major highways are way too low.
