All-terrain vehicle riders, the pain will soon be over.

For years, pneumatic tires -- the kind you fill with air -- have been a burr in the side of the ATV industry. Even on short excursions over rocky terrain a popped tire is not unexpected, and they often occur far from home.

Now, off-road vehicle specialist Polaris plans to debut a consumer version of an “airless” Non-Pneumatic Tire (NPT) by early next year.

Made from a proprietary plastic, the NPT replaces the conventional tire carcass with a flexible web.

“The tire works very similar to a bicycle wheel, where the load is carried in tension across the top of the wheel,” says Polaris spokesperson Jason Difuccia. “The bottom of the wheel is designed to give in to obstacles like rocks, curbs, and other terrain.”

If this works, perhaps they can transfer the technology to bicycle tires

I wonder how it performs on ice? Of course this is just for ATVs it would be interesting to see how they perform on 'everyday' cars.

Will grandma enjoy the ride is the question?

How much road noise?

Will they have the fire siren sound of the 1950's snow tires?

I can see mud being an issue, but on the ricks this would be great.
Wish they would come out with something like this for 4x4 vehicles.

I saw some similar tires for regular cars a few years ago, except they had radial spokes instead of the honeycomb web design of these tires. Driving down the road, the spokes (or in this case, web) is see-through and almost invisible. Kind of a different look. I also like the idea that they are quieter, although I wonder if the dirt, rocks and mud will really work their way out of the tire while driving, or accumulate in the tire until they are washed out with a garden hose (or riding through a good sized puddle).

Very interesting concept. If this concept pans out, it could possibly be applied to tractors and other farm equipement.

I think that this is a lot better application than a car. I would be nervous riding on this type of tire at 70 - 80 mph.
