Think again. World oil production continues to rise. Leading the oil renaissance: the United States. The International Energy Agency predicts that the United States will overtake Saudi Arabia and Russia to become (again!) the world's leading oil producer by 2017. If the agency's estimates prove correct, the United States and Canada together will become net energy exporters by about 2030, and the U.S., which uses 20% of the world's energy, will achieve energy self-sufficiency by the mid-2030s.

Some of the old wells are starting to open up again with oil in the $90-$100 range, and new technologies (like fracking) are turning known reserves into recoverable oil. These advances are likely to continue until they find a way to produce synthetic oil. Scientists produced a barrel of oil from live plants in about 20 minutes using extreme heat and pressure, but the energy required exceeded the energy contained in the oil.

The Shell Oil engineer was 100% correct in his 1950s prediction of peak oil using the viable oil reserves and recovery technologies of the times when he made his prediction. New technology has revealed new viable oil reserves and new oil recovery technology has made oil formations such as shale formations that were know to exist and the reserves discovered since the 1950s such as deep sea recovery economically possible and practical.
