In other news, it has been found that the UFO hidden in the comet tail actually DID pick up the spirits of the Heaven's Gate suicide cult. So don't fret, some doom & gloom fantasies actually DO come true.

Extraction technology will continue to increase the amount of oil that comes from existing wells and fields (some of which were shut down or capped because it costs too much to extract the oil at $20/barrel). Some of the old wells are starting to open up again with oil in the $90-$100 range, and new technologies (like fracking) are turning known reserves into recoverable oil. These advances are likely to continue until they find a way to produce synthetic oil. Scientists produced a barrel of oil from live plants in about 20 minutes using extreme heat and pressure, but the energy required exceeded the energy contained in the oil.

Peak oil occurs when we can no longer export any of our own oil to China, but (sigh) sell it just to Americans.

Peak oil will occur one day but not in our lifetimes. The Shell Oil engineer was 100% correct in his 1950s prediction of peak oil using the viable oil reserves and recovery technologies of the times when he made his prediction. New technology has revealed new viable oil reserves and new oil recovery technology has made oil formations such as shale formations that were know to exist and the reserves discovered since the 1950s such as deep sea recovery economically possible and practical.

It must turn the libbies stomachs that their beloved communist news network is painting a pretty picture for their arch enemy- big oil. Too bad that even with our output, we are STILL too dependent on foreign oil.

There is enough hot gas in this article to out-shine the sun. The author seems to completely miss the main point of peak oil.

The actual true recoverable reserves are indeed time/technology driven and subject to change. Just wait till the current "Global Warming" mania becomes: egad, it's worse: it's "Global Cooling" (for the 20th time since the Pleistocene Era) -in a couple hundred years or less. To quote a lesser known US author: "I shall not die of a cold. I shall die of having lived." -- W. Cather.

The good news is that you can burn all the oil you want. The bad news is that doing so will ruin the earth and make the planet uninhabitable. So, be careful for what you wish for.

Actually, the history of that kind of thing goes back hundreds, if not thousands of years. Doomsayers in England predicted a return to cave dwelling because they were cutting down trees and burning them for fuel faster than new ones were growing. Then somebody discovered coal.

Maybe they should take a tip from the Global Warming crowd did when they re-branded their cause to "Climate Change". When you've got it wrong just change the name. Hmm.....Peak Oil can now be...hmmm....."Oil Change". Yep, we all need an Oil Change now and then.
