Brent crude prices didn’t move much as traders absorbed the death of Chavez who ruled the world’s 6th largest OPEC producer, but it may mask a long-term shift that could impact North American energy trading patterns.

The robust trade in crude oil from Venezuela to the United States is due to the compatibility between the configuration of some U.S. refineries and the quality characteristics of Venezuelan crude, which is predominately sour and medium or heavy.

This is a worrying development for Canadian crude producers, which offer similar type of heavy crude to the U.S. Gulf Coast refineries, and may lose out if Venezuela reforms its oil industry.

Falling oil prices paved the way for Chavez to rise to power and increasing prices gave him the money needed to sustain state spending and con

No need to worry yet, Canadians! Chavez groomed his successor well - he'll be just as anti-America as Hugo was!

Not a drop of the oil produced by *either* country will go to waste. It's just a question of where it's used.

I hope the US doesn't let this affect our relationship with Canada & their oil industry. Let's stay "neighborly." And remember Venezuela has always been a volatile country & I see no reason to think it would change in the future.

Mission is NOT accomplished
Nationalize the oil in Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia,
Oil companies in America
Leave Qatar alone
Then the mission will be accomplished

It would not be a bad idea that the US combine with Canada to join as a country, then both can share all resources, a big powerhouse that can rival Eurozone.

Didn't Canada see the future? pretty hard not to miss. El Dieablo Chavez was being treated for cancer for the past year. Unless Canada has the proverbial ace up the sleeve.

The blubbering from the White House has raised the level of the Potomac two feet and spoiled the fishing(which is Bush's fault, of course.) Looking forard to The Won's glowing encomium.

There are a lot of "ifs" and "mays" in this story and the fact is that nobody really knows what is going to happen with Venezuela politically or economically. Either way, it makes sense for us to work towards better relations with Chavez's successors and hope for the best outcome.

It will be interesting to see if the wealthy elite regain control in Venezuela now that Chavez is dead.

Until America gets a national foreign policy not dictated by multinational corporations, the world will continue to hate us. The world likes our "toys", but hates our ownership of other peoples assets. With increased communication the people of other countries have a chance to read and hear about the corrupt deals made by their government and our corporate partners.
