The U.S. Justice Department on Wednesday asked a federal judge to approve a $1 billion fine against Transocean, the owner of the ill-fated Deepwater Horizon drilling rig, for violation of the federal Clean Water Act. The request comes only a few days before Transocean is due to appear before a second federal judge to plead guilty to criminal charges in the case, which will result in another $400 million in penalties.

Now how about some real jail time for a few of the firm's bumbling and hazardous executives. Fines are never enough for these who never learn from their errors.

If the thought is using this fine on an oil company that spills oil into a river or body of water, okay. But the trouble with government , is they do not use good judgement all of the time.

"is that gun running top dude in prison yet?"

==============================================================

LOL Yeah, if you think that the top dude will ever see hard time, you are sadly mistaken. He is big in demanding justice, but it will never be meted out for "Fast and Furious". That hypocrite is like the "Pot Calling The Kettle Black". Rather, he will get all the "Justice" that money and prestige can buy.

Is the fine unusual punishment that will be overturned or is it realistic?

What to do with all that money. I'm sure the Feds will spend it unwisely.

BP probably considers this just another write-off opportunity and the cost of doing business.

They MAY not be able to pay for this one out of petty cash. The real test will be what criminal penalities will be assigned to BP management as individuals...

$1 billion fine against Transocean?

That sounds about right.

As long as it is $1 billion per person/creature affected. Living and deceased.

Anyone that lives, visits or works in the area or eats seafood from the Gulf Of Mexico.

And let US not forget about the creatures of the area.

Some of the photos show US how disastrous this was to their home and health.

Oh, that's "justice" all right. The politicians get some new money to spend, the victims get nothing.
