Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder on Tuesday refined his sales pitch for raising $1.2 billion in new gas and vehicle taxes by saying the money won't just be designated for fixing the state's roads.

Snyder told a town hall audience in Lansing that some of the money will go toward mass transportation projects, expanding passenger and freight rail and dredging Great Lakes harbors experiencing record-low water levels.

Most gas taxes in most states are already diverted from funding repair and construction of "roads and bridges" as we were promised when they were inacted.

Michigan is a mess because up until recently the auto industry was in the crapper. Lots on Michiganians relied on those jobs and benefits. When they went away so did the people to other states. Decrease the jobs and population and you decrease the tax base.

Gas / motor fuel taxes and auto license fees ARE FOR ROADS.... NOTHING ELSE.

Let "mass transit" pay its own way. Let shipping pay it's own way. Let the railroads pay THEIR OWN WAY.

I understand that mass transit costs will go up, and I understand that rail and shipping costs will also go up, if they have to pay their own way. But I will be paying for what I USE - not for something I don't use.

Here is a idea - raise the gas tax 10 cents a gallon. Mail ME a check every day - so I can quit working and having to pay my own way! Using Snyders thought process, it sure seems fair to me!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Taxing gas but using it elsewhere than what a 'gas tax was originally intended'?? Out of sync!!!

Having just returned from France, I have strong positive opinions re: mass transit. Not sure if the above is the right way to finance mass transit, though.

We are praying for the family and friends of those hurt on the Texas campus.

I don't trust Gov Snyder, he is a tax crazed Republican, he is only taxing citizens. He has eliminated the city income tax credit; the college tuituion and fees credit; homestead property tax deduction has been reduced and a tax on pensions has been created. He gave a $1.8 billion tax cut to business paid for by the citizens.

Unless the vehicle fees take into consideration the type of fuel consumed (gas/diesel vehicles already pay taxes) and therefore assess electric/hybrid vehicles at a higher rate than those already paying road taxes, this will be punitive to most drivers while rewarding the few.
