Batteries work just great, provided you don't use them in anything bigger than an ipad.

. There is other battery technology, I have seen it. There are two reasons you have not. One the government does not want the technology or certain chemicals to be available in the new batteries. Second, Duracell and Union Carbide would go broke if your battery lasted for 5 years of continuous use!

Definitely. Battery technology is still far too primitive and costly.

I agree that the remedy or alternative for the basic battery will be a major breakthrough.

MIT, Georgia Tech and others are working with materials far advanced from Lithium Ion. What amazes me is that A123 folded after getting a wonderful handout from our current administration. And the mini-manhattan project? How much? Wow! Give the money to these kids working on the programs and something will be done.

Energy storage is the next big technological leap we need to make. If we cold simply find a way to capture lightning in a bottle, we would all be happy campers.

The article says " One reason the battery is the slowpoke of the high-tech highway is that it has conflicting functions. Its primary job is to store energy. But it's also supposed to discharge power, lots of it, quickly. Those two jobs are at odds with each other. "If you want high storage, you can't get high power," said M. Stanley Whittingham, director of the Northeast Center for Chemical Energy Storage. "People are expecting more than what's possible."

The measure of progress of a people can be determined by how efficiently they store energy. So far, we aren't doing all that well.

For those with battery cars take heed. Do you know what the difference between a lithium ion battery in a 787 and a chevy volt is, about 35 to 50,000 feet.
