Novel idea, but I hate to be the motorcyclist riding behind the car!

Don't hold your breath. PSA expects to have the first running prototypes by 2016.

So the engine has to run an air compressor which will lessen its gas mileage.

Sounds too good to be true, but then I'm not an automotive engineer. Therefore, it sounds like expensive technology. Or it sounds like April Fools Day has arrived a little early.

"Nothing but another form of a supercharger along with more complexity to up the initial cost and the cost of maintenance and repairs."
=======================================
You could not be more incorrect. A supercharger is a belt driven device that saps horsepower and economy to force more air into the combustion chamber to make a bigger explosion and thus, more power. Great for power, not great for economy. This air hybrid has potential IMO as there is no battery that eventually needs replacing. A compressed air hydraulic motor should be maintenance free - just like the 34 year old air compressor in my garage still on it's original oil. Compressed air in general is very intriguing because you can also recharge the air tank by plugging it into a compressor when you get home. Batteries wear out, air tanks don't.

This is a good one! We need more innovation like this. No expensive batteries to replace! Great idea!
