It will be interesting to see how long It will take for some of these technologies to make into cars that most of us can afford.

If you get 30% (which I doubt) better mileage with a diesel but pay 20% for the fuel that is less than 9% overall savings Diesel engines cost more, and cost more to repair (they do generally last longer) but gasoline engines routinely last 120,000 plus miles and few people keep them longer than that I do not think 30 increased mileage is accurate, which means savings would be even less So with all the facts don't buy a diesel because you think it will save you money, buy what you want to drive & like

30 mpg in a Jeep! That is double what I get in my 95 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.2 V8, I get 15.1 mpg.

With diesel costing about 20% -25% more than gas in a lot of places diesel mileage needs to be that much better than gas to equal out and a diesel option costs more than gas engine.

I would like a Toyota Camry. I would like to add a diesel engine to it. Is that possible?

Higher diesel costs may offset the fuel efficiency, however.

Hmmm, maybe they should have compared the VW diesel to the Jeep. My 2.0L turbo charged 2.0L VW diesel nets better than 40 MPG regularly.

Watch out Ford and GM, Jeep/Chrysler is smart and going to start making diesel engines really available. I have heard some really good things about the Fiat diesel engine, very popular in Europe.

I'd still have my Jeeps if they had been diesels. 16-17 mpg in real life-- manual or automatic, in 2 wheel drive or 4 wheel drive--really was a huge pain.

Not sure about 'wheel shutters' but certainly look forward to more SUV makers using Diesels.

Based on March contracts for corn and ethanol, producers are losing 26 cents on each gallon of the fuel made.
Even the producers don't like ethanol.

And none of them rely on batteries to produce greater efficiency and better mileage. A step in the right direction.

Don't say the auto industry isn't a prime mover in the use of technology!! And it's not technology for the sake of technology, it's technology that makes everything work better and more efficiently.
