When U.S. natural gas producers release their 2012 annual reports in the next several weeks, many companies may have to drastically reduce a key indicator of their financial health: reserves.

Even though U.S. natural gas prices have bounced away from the decade lows of last April, the country's Securities and Exchange Commission requires companies to calculate and report year-end oil and gas reserves using 12-month average prices....

...Production from shale fields such as Marcellus in Pennsylvania and West Virginia, Haynesville in Louisiana, Fayetteville in Arkansas, and new fields in Ohio and elsewhere, have kept gas priced well below the $4 mark that the companies often cite as a benchmark for healthy returns....

So, it's time for the producers to find more buyers.

Let's see oil & gas prices fall -- greedy speculators have got to go. CFTC, do your job.

when the industry's solution is to drill it and just burn/waste it it's pretty shortsighted

This resource needs to be managed for the long term not just for the benefit of the oil barons and their stockpiles of gold.

See the article down below titled "A Mysterious Patch Of Light Shows Up In The North Dakota Dark" which talks about the amount of natural gas being flared off as a waste by-product in the Bakken oil fields because it is not economical to capture and sell. From the consumer's standpoint it's nice to see low NG prices, but from the standpoint of our long-term energy needs and environmental protection, a higher price would be beneficial.

No need to worry if those gas companies will be profitable.

In other words, reserves are mostly financial numbers rather than resources in the ground.

yup!

now low unnatural methane gas prices are bad for industry and revenue....

so... what does that mean???

we should feel sorry they only made a trillion bucks last year in under-taxed profits....

and chip in an extra 40 cents a therm....

"N.G. is the most UNSAFE fuel we have !!!!"

Amplion, have you been listening to NPR again?
I heard that show, over the weekend.
I just don't know where to begin to debunk their scaaaary scare tactics.
It's like some kind of goofy religion.
The people who are telling you this garbage are not your friends.
They don't have the best interests of human beings at heart.
No matter how sincere and distraught they sound, they are still crazy.

What is terrible to these people is that it really might make the USA energy independent and that scares liberals who only want to destroy.
And I'll leave it at that: they only want to destroy.

obama could help them by supporting the use of Natural Gas in vehicles in America and he would be also be helping the American public in several different ways. Fuel cost, pollution and balance of payments. What kind of a deal is obama getting to not support the Natural Gas and from whom?
