Jesse Levinson does not much worry about this when he drives his prototype Volkswagen Touareg around the Stanford University campus here. A computer vision system he helped design keeps an unblinking eye out for pedestrians and cyclists, and automatically slows and stops the car.

Someday soon, few drivers will have to worry about car crashes and collisions, whether on congested roads or on empty highways, technology companies and car manufacturers are betting. But even now, drivers are benefiting from a suite of safety

As long as it helps the driver and not take them out of the loop.

Wonder what happens when the computer decides to avoid a pedestrian but changes direction and takes out a nearby scooter?

Just another step in shedding responsibility from the individual. How in the world is that progress?

We do multitasking even while driving , and need some device that warns or controls vehicle under such activities.

Pretty soon we won't have to think for ourselves at all. (Even though some folks have a head start on this already.)

The driver should be in full control/responsibility of the vehicle at all times.

No thanks, I will drive myself.

As far as dumb pedestrians who wander into traffic with both thumbs a texting on their phone, well the government has not been able to tax or spend enough to solve that problem.

More money is definitely needed. NOT
