LAS VEGAS--As hints leaked that both Lexus and Audi would be showing autonomous cars at CES 2013, no less a publication than the Wall Street Journal hyped the story. However, those expecting to see cars driving themselves around the Las Vegas Convention Center were disappointed. This trend had no gas.

Lexus burst the bubble with a surprisingly short press conference. The company brought two of its LS sedans on stage, one of them fitted with sensors and processors to research advanced safety features. Lexus vice president Mark Templin described the company's research as focused on safety, which could be taken as a reaction to Toyota's troubles from a few years ago over unintended acceleration issues.

This allows drivers to pay less attention to what they are doing. We need just the opposite - easy to see somebody saying "I'll just put the car on automatic while I answer this text message..." ....CRASH!!

Yes, that's the way it's going to be. All automatic. In fact, in the future, most of us won't own cars (they'll be too expensive anyway). Instead, we'll rent them and use an app to order and program a transport.

Car is made to be driven by humans. Not to rely on electronic devices.

I never equated a car to a gun... you did... I simply said that it is a deadly weapon. But since you brought it up, on average 93 people die per day in motor vehicle accidents while only 16 people die per day in gun violence.

Simple math... design has nothing to do with use and intent.

PS: deadly weapon my eye...

the automobile is not designed to be a deadly weapon like a gun...

a gun is made to kill.. no other reason....

a car is made for transportation.. it can kill, but it is designed to 'save'

I'd be concerned about a potential malfunction, then again, there are already a lot of malfunctioning drivers out there now.

Having a drivers license means you are licensed to use a deadly weapon. Like any other deadly weapon, the owner must know how to use the weapon properly in all situations. The American driver has forgotten this fact and treats having a license and a vehicle as a right as opposed to a privilege. In addition, they use this weapon carelessly and without regard to others around them.

Therefore, if we can remove the human factor from the operation of this deadly weapon, then more lives will likely be saved. I hope more auto manufacturers push for improvements in this technology.

I would have one of these only if there was an override switch to turn it off in case it malfunctions.

Just the thing for the people who are so busy texting and phoning their friends that they can't pay attention to the 2 ton machine they are supposed to be controlling.
