Aren't there counties with more miles of roads than the Netherlands? With their high population aren't there more people per mile so any improvement is cheaper per person?

Really, why? To keep up with the jones? We can't even keep the pot holes filled. Besides, don't they have exspensive toll roads to cover the cost?

"Nice but let's start spending all the gas tax money just on highway infrastructure and public transit maintenance and improvements."
Nice try but it won't fly. If it actually happened that means the government would have to raise all our taxes to pay for projects that are being paid for now with the gas tax money. Are you ready for that?

"The design firm behind the project says it would like to bring the concept to the United States eventually, but Americans shouldn't hold their breath. Current levels of infrastructure spending are barely sufficient to maintain our "D" grade from the American Society of Civil Engineers and our 23rd-place global ranking from the World Economic Forum."
Nice but let's start spending all the gas tax money just on highway infrastructure and public transit maintenance and improvements.
Electroluminescent panel and strip lighting in and outside military and commercial aircraft could also be easily utilized. It would be very effective at entrance and exit ramps from Interstates. Arrow shapes could even prevent some drunks from getting on Interstates and going the wrong way. One of these accidents happened just this past week in MA and killed at least one person.

Cool idea. Like the fantasy of glowing cars that contain drivers who have been drinking even better. But want the wireless EV charging highways first.

Ummm, because the federal debt has gone up 60% in the past 4 years
Ummm, because the federal debt rises $50,000 every second.
Ummm because the federal debt will rise from 9 billion in 2009 to 22 billion by 2017
So where does the money to do it come from?

I think all that's really needed is to maintain the paint markings we have, including the glass added for reflectivity. As one of my friends would say, this is "like killing an ant with a sledgehammer."

We haven't reached that stage in our degeneration where this is widely precieved as "way awesomer." Give it time. The kids are in charge.

Fewer miles of roads in Holland than in the US so likely more cost-effective. Might have to wait for this until after cities, states and the federal government get their budgetary houses in order.

glow in the dark road makings are neat, but the rest, not so much. The additive to the paint would hopefully be cheap enough to use everywhere.
As said though, are barely keeping our roads passable in some places, so this is asking a lot.
