Tactical trash? The Army has cracked the secret of converting garbage to fuel in the field.
The Tactical Garbage to Energy Refinery II prototype (TGER) is mounted on a trailer and can turn about a ton of garbage into electricity. A typical 550-person unit generates about 2,500 pounds of trash a day. And whether that’s paper, plastic, packaging or food waste, one standard 60-kilowatt diesel generator can handle the unit’s garbage, making synthetic gas from it.
TGER’s fuel can run a generator on approximately 75 percent within two hours; in under 12 hours, TGER can produce alcohol that, when blended with the synthetic gas, can run a generator on full power.

I didn't see a per-gallon cost estimate either, but it's probably a heck of a lot less than flying the stuff to Afghanistan.

The Army and all the services have come a long way in getting energy smart.
This is especially true with fielded battalions operating in a combat theater. Few may realize that one Abrams Tank, the best in the world, requires the support from five fuel supply trucks to be fully operational!

Troops driving and escourting fuel supply convoys in Iraq had the most dangerous duty. Our soldiers at the front require more and more electricity from field generators to run the steadily increasing amount of high tech gear for communications, detection, and support. New doctrine is that the less fuel that needs to be transported, the better. Fighting smarter!

An excellent way to be independent of local grids while in the field and lower the military's overall demand for fuel (thus keeping prices down). It will also enhance our troops' reputation when they don't leave so much trash behind. Great outside-the-box innovation!

Put a series of these outside the US Capitol Building in D.C. and we could power the entire country for years!

Many innovative ideas are perfected in the military because they have the base and the manpower to thoroughly test them. If this will work on a large scale, the military will find out.

Nice, but the other problem at FOBs is water. So where are they getting the water for the injection process? How much does it require?

I hope this is true. I'm skeptical. War does produce technical improvements. I read the whole story and no tech details included. Alcohol seems to be produced by some mystery process along with a 60kw generator?
