OCALA, Fla. -- A 12-year-old north Florida boy shot a high-powered rifle and hit a 69,000-volt transmission line, causing almost 6,000 customers in Lynne, Silver Springs Shores, Silver Springs and Ocklawaha to lose service for several hours.
The Ocala Star-Banner (http://bit.ly/Vw7rxh) reports that the Clay Electric Co-op said the outage began at about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday and lasted for about five hours.
The Marion County Sheriff's Office has classified the incident as accidental, since the boy claimed he was shooting the rifle at tree limbs and was not targeting the transmission line.
Clay Electric serves approximately 165,000 members in 14 counties including Marion.

Sounds like a 12 year old doing what a 12 year old would do with a high powered rifle.

So a 12-year-old shooting a high-powered rifle at branches is OK? Tell me again why a 12-year-old needs access to a high-powered rifle to shoot at trees in city limits?

A rifle in the hands of a 12 year old powerful enough to take out a transmission line. The parents or guardians are responsible for reasonable damages.

The kid probably didn't want to admit he was shooting squirrels. What are the odds here?

How far do those bullets travel? At best the kid is ignorant and the parents are stupid. Lock the parents up and take that gun away from them.

"high-powered rifle" - I bet it was a .22 single shot rifle. Just slanted media hype on the story as usual.

"High-powered rifle"? Any time you discharge a firearm, it should be with the knowledge that the bullet will not endanger people or property if you miss the intended target. People simply firing handguns into the air in celebration of New Year's have killed and injured people on the ground when the bullet came down. Same with bullets fired by hunters aiming at game and missing, only to have the bullet travel on to do its damage.

Firing a rifle into the air this way is just plain dumb. And the kid was 12 years old? Parental controls? Lack of safety training?

why did a 12 year old have access to a "high powered rifle"?

He should be plinking with a .22, not a 30-06.

Also in gun safety, he should have learned, ALWAYS know your backdrop. Never shoot in the air. That slug can go over 3 miles. (and still be leathal). Luckily, he hit a powerline, and not a human.

A very good example of why we need stricter gun laws.

Just like criminals, it seems like only real yahoos are out shooting guns for no good reason and very little common sense!

Clearly the 12 year old does not understand much about rifles and likely has had no formal training and therefore should not be using one. I say this because a standard hunting round will travel 1-3 miles (depending on caliber and grain load) while some high power rifles have rounds that can travel 6-8 miles. Therefore, shooting at a tree limb is not a very responsible thing to do with any rifle when the possibility of missing and killing someone.

Finally, this article does not belong in this blog.
