Alaska will finance $355 million of a liquefied natural gas project on the North Slope to support an LNG trucking operation as well as LNG regasification facilities near Fairbanks, in Interior Alaska, as well as an expanded gas distribution system in the city, Governor Sean Parnell said late Friday.

The proposal needs approval by the state Legislature in its 2013 session. An Interior Alaska electric cooperative, Golden Valley Electric Association, has been working on a plan for an LNG plant that would convert 9 Bcf/year to LNG, which would replace oil that Golden Valley now uses to generate electricity at generation plant near North Pole, east of Fairbanks.

Golden Valley would also make gas available to Flint Hills Resources for its refinery, also at North Pole and which also uses oil fo

Given the high cost of heating oil and the relatively low cost of NG, this looks like a good investment.

Alaska governor announces plan to finance small LNG project on North Slope. Should state or federal government be doing this, leave this kind of development to private enterprise instead? The Alaskan oil and gas fields are just beginning to die out, suck out as much of it out of the ground before it's to late.

Government, both state and federal, have to be involved in these type of projects. Private industry is reluctant to invest in long term research & developement, because share holders demand instant profit and the oil and gas industry certainly will not jeopardize their billions of profit

OK - so I am new on Gasbuddy (used it for a long time but just started participating) and I figured it would be awesome. The only down side I can find is the political hatred and accusses to attack people. Maybe I can suggest that many people the next time they drive their car/truck or whatever put in your favorite music and turn off Rush Limbaugh......
