Whether you like it or not, you are an investor in the electric vehicle (EV) battery of tomorrow.

Late last week, the Department of Energy announced plans to spend $120 million to establish a major battery research center at the Argonne National Lab outside of Chicago. The stated goal: to create a new “Manhattan Project” that will develop an EV battery in the next five years that lasts five times as long and costs one-fifth as much as current EV batteries.

Other people's money is so darn easy to spend. Good thing we grant our irresponsible leaders with unfettered access to it.

Tax money well spent! We need this not only for EV owners, but anything that depends on battery for power.

Sure why not. Except don't wake up one day and complain that you have no money in your wallet after the IRS gets done with you.

Marketing company's discovered it first, but now the Government knows too. Another foolproof way of convincing the gullible masses to willingly submit to forking more of their money over without blinking: Just tell them "were investing in Green Energy to Save the Planet"

Who doesn't love the planet? If you object you must be an awful person that hates the planet.

It's just like their other foolproof fleecing the taxpayer plan: "It's for the children & education". If you object to having your money stolen & wasted, it means you hate children and are against education.

Works every time. You've been had. But it feels good, right?

Let's hope they at least do something. EV battery technology is too primitive and costly right now.

NO NO NO!!!!! Once upon a time, people who robbed from other people were called criminals and punished. Today they are called professional politicians and they rape & pillage the masses with total immunity. Come on Americans, snap out of your brain washed stupor.

Glad to know we've entered a fancy, bright new age where research & development can only be funded by the government.

my parents and grandparents paid for hoover dam and all the electicity i use today. my parents paid the costs of the WWII in blood and treasure. i paid the costs of my parents social security and medicare.

please stop whining about paying the costs of keeping america great.

we have progressed from an 18th century agrarian society to a 19th century industrial society to a 20th century manufacturing society. this 21st does not stop the evolutionary process. we must invest in the future or live in the past.

md11capt, the same could be said about MSNBC; but then neither comment would be relevant to the article, would they?

This country has lost its desire and ability to do great things. I'm glad that President Kennedy wasn't a small thinker, or we never would have landed on the moon. Creating a better battery is better than starting a war over WMD's that didn't exist.

This EV project is nothing compared to Obama's bigger plans for your money.

Obama is smiling ear to ear while forcing the House to either accept a lousy tax deal or his preferred choice - go off the fiscal cliff so that everyone pays higher taxes!

Obama gets our money for Christmas and beyond.
We will get a large piece of coal and the shaft.

This is what 51% of you voted for.

I'm neutral on this as battery technology does not only benefit the EV market. There are many other applications of this research. But as is pointed out in the comments - is this the best use of our tax dollars? Are there other research topics offering greater good?

Also, I may be ignorant of the different facilities around the country to do this type of research but I find it interesting that the Argonne National Lab was selected for this project. It is run by the University of Chicago for the DOE, so I'm sure BHO, Dick Durbin, and Rahm Emanuel are happy with the decision to send more federal money to Chicago.
