Automakers reported their strongest monthly sales in nearly five years Monday, suggesting a solid end to 2012 and continued recovery in 2013.

Overall industry sales totaled more than 1.14 million units in the United States in November — up 15 percent from the 994,721 reported during the same period a year ago. That translated into a seasonally adjusted annualized selling rate of 15.54 million units, the highest since January 2008.

Nobody is paying cash, but at least rates are dirt cheap right now. In that respect, it's a good time to buy if you can afford the monthlies. And whatever you buy should save you a few bucks on gas, which of course goes out the window with the increased cost to insure it. Many people sleep better at night with no car payment.
