while an increase in gas tax may be needed, the waste of money needs to be stopped first.

It's sadly amazing just how much people expect free things like roads, highways and bridges and gnash their teeth about actually paying for these things with a tax.

This is coming from a fairly conservative governor and is not just a liberal response as suggested by some who don't pay attention. Fact is, no one has been paying enough attention to infrastructure. Highways are expensive. Or should we just give everyone a shovel and a load of tar and let the public maintain the roads? Of course, the hidden cost would be the much higher car maintenance that everyone would incur, but taxes would be cut! So much for the short-sighted.

Probably the richest state government in the nation and they can't manage their road system without raising taxes. Oh I forgot, road tax is regressive tax in that the poor pay more in proportion to their income.

Extremely obvious political quote of the day: "Some system of long-term financing for the state's highway system is essential, he said."
Yup, and who better to finance it than the people who use it? So, if the fuel tax goes up, time to consider something more efficient that does the same job that you need to do with it. If you choose wisely, you get down to even-steven. If you choose even wiser than that, you get ahead of the game a bit.
Not "rocket surgery" folks (that is my favourite unintentionally funny line from the US election this year)
