As embarrassments go, Ford Motor couldn't face a worse recall than one that wraps together two critical 2013 vehicles and a technology that it has spent the most time and money trying to burnish: Fusion sedan, Escape crossover and the EcoBoost turbocharged engine.

Yet on Monday Ford was at a loss to explain why the 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine in two big-selling models was overheating and might catch fire — or how it plans to fix the 89,153 vehicles involved. Ford is urging owners to park their vehicles, contact their dealers and arrange for loaners.

So far, 12 fires were reported in the Escapes and one in the Fusion, which just went on sale, says Ford spokesman Said Deep. No injuries were reported.

Not a good sitruation , but most people with eco-boost F150's haven't had any problems.

This is really a bad thing to happen to them & especially since they did not take government hand outs like Chevrolet did.

Ford makes four different Eco-Boost engines, the one that seems to be involved here is the 1.6 liter. This engine, which is built in the UK, originated some years ago as the 1.6 liter "Cortina" engine. That engine has been used in a number of vehicles for years, and has generally been regarded as a good engine. UK also builds the 1.3 liter 3 cylinder engine as well.

The other two, the 2.0 liter 4 cylinder started life in German Fords, and seems to be well regarded in all successor models.

The 3.5 liter V6 is the newest and was designed here in the US in 2006.

The overheat problem seems to be in just the 1.6 liter engine. Has anybody heard of a widespread overheating problem with the other engines?

Note that certain Volvo models also use this same engine.

Tiny engines with large power increases can be a problem for durability. The old motto " No replacement for displacement"does hold true.

I thought the 1.6L engine was already proven in Europe before they brought it over to the US. If so, someone made a bad choice on a component change...

I would bring it back and never drive a Ford again. Ford might have to change it name to Forb for Found on road burned.
