JEFF RUBINPublished Thursday, Nov. 22, 2012 03:46PM EST

Move over OPEC: North America is about to become a net exporter of oil.

At least, that’s the word from the International Energy Agency’s latest outlook. According to the IEA, the drilling boom for shale oil in states like North Dakota is putting U.S. crude production on track to pass Saudi Arabia. North of the border, output from Alberta’s oil sands is expected to notch a similarly grand expansion.

But the agency’s rosy forecast isn’t all that it appears – and it certainly isn’t going to lead to a significant break at the pump for you.

This is an Opinion Piece.

That aside, this article does show that the price of oil is a very complex issue. It doesn't appear that it can be controlled by any single person.

The consumer can also expect fewer American dollars flowing into the Inferno known as the Muddle East, terror is their greatest export.

Why is there no mandate to keep oil that comes from North America in North American?

Much of what you write, Mr. Rubin, is correct. The best the consumer can hope for is more stable prices.

I wouldn't be surprised if pump prices never came down even if we really did become energy independent.

"This is a fundamental economic tenet that continually confounds the geologists of the peak oil movement"

Really? I doubt they are "confounded".

A lot to look forward to; an abundance of oil here and higher pump prices also. What's the upside? We lose on both fronts...

Now I have to wonder if this author is in the pocket of Big Oil and he or she is trying to prime the pump and prepare us for the next round of continued gouging. I did not observe to much to do with Natural Gas which appears to be a Nemesis of crude in the fact that it about 1/3 to 1/2 the cost of gasoline and has no Ethanol. Wow, that is a double whammy.

More food for thought on a subject considerably more complex than it seems on the surface. But when all is said and done, will the side that can say "I told you so" really feel that good about it?

No surprise. "Energy independence" is just an ad campaign used by Big Oil. It justifies their actions to skirt any inconvenient laws that make it more costly to deplete our natural resources and ship them to the highest bidder. GREED, pure and simple.

Dropping natural gas prices plus alternative energy production from solar and wind could lead to cheaper electricity, thus more incentive for EV sales growth.

Even though the oil is produced here there will be no releif in the pump prices.
