IT used to be taken for granted that as economies grew, they would use more oil. That was a major reason cited in warnings that the world would run out of oil, particularly if standards of living rose in developing countries. Well, standards of living are improving in developing countries, but the dire forecasts now appear to be wrong. In part that is because new discoveries and improving technologies have increased the amount of oil that can be produced. It also reflects conservation, in part, as cars become more efficient and as other steps are taken to reduce oil use. The International Energy Agency, in its 2012 World Energy Outlook forecast that American oil production, which began to rise in 2009 after decades of decline, would continue rising through at least 2020.

Yeah, and if it did not, they would raise the price anyway.

Energy conservation should not be confused with energy efficiency. efficiency is the goal along with an unlimited energy supply.

The best solution to all of our energy woes is to simply conserve what we have. While it can be argued we could have been achieving 40, 50+ mpg years ago, we didn't, but it's good we're working on getting there now. I like that people are starting to realize this and are becoming more environmentally aware.

It still needs repeating : Lower the oil prices here and the economy will pick up. Its kinda like trying to run a vehicle on gas/diesel but instead of giving it what it needs to run effectively & efficiently starving it hoping it will continue to run as it did with the right amount. IF gas/diesel prices dropped at least $1 a gal people would have more $$$ to buy other things thereby improving the ailing economy.

Alternate to oil is needed, we heard a lot of oil stock limitation, they are changing their stand now, where are they? ( who said oil will last another 25 -30 years and raised gas prices)

While we must continue down our road to energy efficiency and independence, we must recognize that other countries will go down their own path at their own speed. Germany is arguably further down the road than we are but rather than hold them back we should speed up our own progress.

What great news! Damn the forecasters... negative forecasts feed the media and inflame the unknowing public.
