They won't get my consideration unless they are economical to operate (i.e., don't use the most expensive fuel)

Remember what happened to Toyota when they were posed to be #1. It only lasted a short while and resulted in millions of recalls. Guess sometimes it doesn't pay to be #1.

Then they had better get a large car or Suv that will hold 5 to 7 people and charge you an arm and a leg for it. Small cars are ok and their Toureg is good sized but for 50 grand it should be. They need something like the Chrysler 300 in size and price and by price I do not mean like the SRT 300.

If they could engineer out the weird stuff that breaks and cost hundreds of dollars to repair, I'd buy another VW. Otherwise, it's Japanese reliability over German excitement for me.

RockyGuitar has it pegged. BUT, VW is also the worst chicken when it comes to making a decision to bring in cars that it could sell in a heartbeat, like the 70+ mpg diesel cars that it already sells elsewhere. Even lily-livered Ford is beating them at that game by selling high mpg Euro-spec cars. If VW is hesitant, just do a mock sales run in Canada first, and watch them fly out of the showrooms.
There are two VW turbodiesel station wagons in the driveway right now, and there will never be a third VW purchase if they don't deep-six the horribly diesel-guzzling 2.0 L CR series engine as the ONLY choice available in North America. That 2.0 is also available in Europe, but it isn't the only diesel available--just the thirstiest by a big margin. The new 2.0 powered wagon is HORRIBLE compared to the older one. 900km per 55 litres is a rare success, whereas the older one can often get 1200km on the same amount. I'd rather the new wagon had the existing 1.6 L CR series engine, or even one of their new smaller 3 cylinder diesel.

Fun cars, but VW needs to improve its reliability record to Toyota's level for me to consider buying one. I'm also interested to know if they plan to build a natural gas vehicle.
