Some time next year, you'll be able to buy a Ford Fiesta subcompact car powered by the smallest engine the automaker has ever made.

With that engine, the Fiesta will be more fuel efficient than any other non-hybrid car on the market, Ford announced on Monday, getting over 40 miles per gallon on the highway. Exact fuel economy figures for the 1.0-liter, three-cylinder engine, which will be small enough to fit inside a piece of carry-on luggage, are not available yet, however.

If the engine is anything like the Sprint engine (Suzuki's 1 liter, 3-cylinder engine), it could have pep and still get over 50 mpg. Ours got 54 mpg in real-world driving, until the dealer couldn't get parts to repair it.

Putting in more and/or different gears would bring up the gas milage. Simple and not as costly in most cases.

Geo used to have a 3 cylinder engine a few years ago that wouldn't let the car get out of it's own way. Why don't they just try putting in push pedals instead.
