Warning lights flashed and bells sounded before a truck hauling a parade float loaded with wounded veterans began crossing railroad tracks into the path of a oncoming train Thursday in Midland, Texas, federal investigators said Saturday in a briefing.

The subsequent crash killed four veterans and wounded 16 other people.

According to a preliminary timeline and other data released by National Transportation Safety Board, the agency investigating the accident, investigators haven't found any mechanical problems or defects with the signals and gates at the grade crossing, or with the condition of the train or section of the track.

Poor planning. Didn't they know that those railroad tracks were there for a purpose? Didn't the organizers of the parade know when the train was scheduled?

But then, that is typical Texas.

This accident should have never happened. The organizers must bear all the blame. Why did the parade route cross an active rail line? If there wasn't an alternative route, why wasn't someone monitoring the train schedule and/or location of train traffic.

This is really sad.

The driver of the parade flow should have had the brains enough to know that trains don't stop for them.
