Friends of a Kansas City single mother killed Wednesday in a car accident apparently caused by another driver’s sneezing attack prayed Friday for the mother’s 1-year-old son.

The boy, injured in the accident near Smithville Lake, remained in serious condition Friday at Children’s Mercy Hospital.

“We are pretty much in shock and just having a hard time wrapping our heads around the whole thing,” said Cheryl Krecker, a friend and colleague of Laura McClendon, 30.

McClendon had taken a new job this summer after working for about five years with Krecker at Cramer LLC, a Kansas City office seating manufacturer.

I have heard that it's impossible to keep one's eyes open while sneezing, and I've seen people sneeze 6 or 7 times in a row, so I can see this scenario happening. Even a bee in a car has caused major wrecks.

sad news.
My wife had an accident from a sneezing fit once (luckily she was stopped and she was ok, just hit the garage door).

Tough one on how the body reacts to foreign objects or dirty air. I've read about this many times.

That's odd, but I guess anything could happen while you're driving. Well, while you're doing anything to be more precise.

I sneeze sometimes while driving, but this does not affect me, because i try to drive safe and look far ahead and far behind with my mirrors constantly so if something were to come up, i can safely slow down or maneuver. This is what semi truck drivers train for; are always looking far ahead and in mirrors so in case something comes up, they know where to go. DRIVE SAFE people!

I'm always apprehensive when I'm driving and have to sneeze since they usually come in threes with me. And it's hard enough to just catch my breath between them that paying attention to driving is near impossible.

Agree it is hard to stop a sneeze and anticipate when it comes. Sad to have this happen that some one was killed and the child is in serious condition.

Choking, sneezing, heart attack - the list goes on... Unfortunately, we can not avoid these and other medical situations. Hopefully if they do occur we have enough time and thought to pull over safely out of traffic.

A really bad deal all around...
Inattentiveness/complacency I believe is still a larger problem/killer than a sneezing attack. A reason the person I hit is not here today. She took a horrible risk in NOT knowing if traffic was clear and went ahead and drove across the road. The wreck was unavoidable. I can still see her...

I find that when I sneeze while driving it is almost always timed with an action that requires the eye to remain open such as meeting an oncoming car on a narrow road or mid-turn. Have you ever tried to keep your eyes open when sneezing? Don't believe it can be done.

If you can't sneeze and still drive... unless it was a sneezing attack, that is. A single sneeze shouldn't have that much affect! Loosen grip when you feel it approaching so you don't jerk the wheel.
