Rick Kitchings has been a small-engine mechanic for about 30 years, and he’s been busier than ever lately.

Recently, a customer came into his shop in Savannah, Ga., with a string trimmer that had barely been used. “It looked like it just came off the showroom floor, but the motor was absolutely shot, absolutely worn out.”

The owner had fueled the trimmer with an gasoline-ethanol blend, which is becoming increasingly common thanks to a federal mandate to convert to bio-fuels.

Lawnmowers and boat motors everywhere are choking. They’re starving for gas, because the little needle holes in them are stopped up with the gel that happens when that stuff breaks down. It stops them up so it can’t run. a chain reaction of events that end up clogging valves and rusting out small metal parts.

crep, again seafoam, stabil, or whatever is expensive relative to ethanol. And neither of those will prevent the damage to the fuel lines etc. Add to that, draining the tank is unnecessarily risking a HAZMAT spill.

The gas tank should be drained BEFORE not after the engine has been stored for a few months. In any case, to be safe, you should add fuel stabilizer to prevent the carburetors from gunking up. Sea Foam works great.

Yes is the answer to your question NedW.

One has to understand his moniker, National Socialist Democratic Party or nsdp.

That's just a ridiculous statement nsdp, why force a product on consumers that you must add an expensive stabilizer to or pour out a volatile product risking and EPA violation if a drop is spilled. Sometimes you just make no sense at all.

Ethanol the engine killer it should be taken off the market. People shouldn't have to take extra steps to protect their engine from fuel plan and simple

The problem here is the users don't either use fuel stabilizer or empty the gas tank when they are through. We have a user problem not a gasoline problem.

If you are opposed to the current law that mandates the use of ethanol in our motor vehicle fuel since ethanol is the only viable alternative fuel available in the needed quantity, then let your US representative & senators know of your opposition to any ethanol use.

Congress, not the EPA, is the only entity that can eliminate the mandate for the use of alternative motor vehicle fuels (Renewable Fuels Standard) to end the plague of Ethanol.

Here is the collar counties around Chicago we have had a 10% blend of Ethanol and gas for many years. I've used this gas in everything from V8 cars to lawn mowers, snow blowers and weed whackers. I've never had a problem caused by the gas we have to use. Although it can cause problems, I think that they are the exception rather than the rule.

Well, duh! After losing a lawn tractor and a snowblower to ethanol damage, I switched to electric for both. I also found out that both were lots cheaper to buy and LOTS cheaper to run. Ethanol damage did me a favour--even though it took me some time to realize it.

Ethanol can lead to high costs. The same is true for gas powered generators. If a generator stays off for more than a month, the ethanol will fall to the bottom of the tank and block the pipe. If it is really needed, it may not work. To solve that, the one thing said is to have the engine run for a couple of minutes a month. That is a waste of money.

Ethanol is can cause some costly trouble. It is best if it were not even put to use.

If you have the owners manual for the particular piece of power equipment in question, consult it to find how whether it is acceptable to use an ethanol blend. Many pieces of power equipment allow the users to use a blend that is no higher than 10% ethanol.

Amazing small-engine manufactures are so stupid they can't design motors to run on alternative fuels. I guess all the US educated engineers are working in communist China.

Since the EPA demands that we use Ethanol, they should be held liable for any pay for any damage to engines.
