“Investors interested in cellulosic ethanol often ask when the technology will be ready at commercial scale,” says Ghisolfi. “PROESA enables customers to produce advanced biofuel at a cost-competitive price relative to conventional biofuels – at large-scale and today. Our complete offering makes cellulosic biofuel projects bankable and replicable. With the world’s first commercial plant up and running here in northern Italy, I very much look forward to an exciting journey of establishing an entirely new, and very promising, industry.”

There must be some legal and technical problems. One ethanol plant (GEVO?) in Minnesota converted from ethanol to biobutanol. Then they switched back, citing a patent infringement and some other stuff. They *want* to go that direction but it isn't feasible currently, for whatever reason.

Biobutanol is close, but not ready for prime time. The enzymes aren't really that great yet. It looks like everyone in the ethanol industry is watching closely though and ready to switch when the time is right, unlike the oil industry, where change is bad.

When will get away from the moronic use of ethanol for fuel.
If we are going to start using cellulose, let's be half way smart about it and make larger size molecules such as butanol. more energy per gallon and much easier to blend with gasoline. and much more compatible with cars.

An interesting blog that points to butanol.
