I came across some 100% Xylene that a coworker was getting rid of. He suggested I put it in my flexfuel F-150, as long as i don't go over 50% mix. Anyone know anything related to this chem?

"I'd be a bit curious as to why he (1) has so much xylene on hand, and (2) why does he need to get rid of it? "

Why would you care?

xylene is a main component, or just within the range of acceptable carbon chains that makes up gas?

And where is he getting this stuff? And why would a FFV be any better vehicle to put it in?

Use it to wash parts and leave it out of your fuel system Xylene is a anti knock compound and extremely hard on oil based paint.

"Besides if it is such a great fuel, why did your friend not put it in his own tank?"

He does, every time he fills his car up with fuel. Xylene is one of the main components of gasoline.

I can tell you all about the chemical structure of Xylene. I cannot tell you if it would be a good fuel source or not. My guess is it would be OK since flex fuel cars are pretty forgiving. However, I can also tell you that I would not use it as a fuel. The stuff makes great solvent. Everything from paint thinner to cleaning up oil spills on the driveway. Unless we are talking about a large amount, I would keep it around for that.

Besides if it is such a great fuel, why did your friend not put it in his own tank?
